Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a non-invasive and simple procedure that can improve the brightness of the patient’s natural teeth. There are various options to restore your teeth’s natural whiteness and to make you look more youthful and healthy, including in-the office laser teeth whitening and at-home bleaching trays.

Let’s answer some of the frequently asked questions about teeth whitening

1)     What are the ways of teeth whitening ?

·       In-Office WhiteningTeeth whitening done in a professional dental setting is a safe, effective way to brighten your smile.

This technique offers the fastest results with the most powerful whitening solutions available. First, your gums and tooth-root surfaces will be covered with a protective barrier to ensure your safety. A thin plastic device known as a retractor will hold your lips and cheeks away from your teeth as a professional-strength gel is applied. It will take about an hour for the whole procedure. When it is removed, the results will be obvious immediately.

·       Home Whitening — This is another effective way to whiten your teeth, though you will play a greater role in ensuring the best possible results and several weeks may be needed to achieve your desired level of whiteness. First, customised trays are made for your teeth, you will fill the trays with whitening gel and then position the trays over your teeth. The patient wears the tray for 2 hours daily for approximately 20 days. The process is very effective and yields optimal results. The only inconvenience is that the patient has to avoid consuming staining foods and beverages for the duration of the treatment. Accidental ingestion or spilling of the gel has to be avoided for safety.

·       Laser Teeth Whitening

For faster results the best option is professional laser teeth whitening, a procedure done in the dental office. With laser teeth whitening the dentist applies a gel and then uses a laser to accelerate the process. The session takes approximately 1hour  usually no additional treatment is required. The patient can consume staining foods and beverages within 48 hours

2) How my teeth whitens up?

Teeth can be whitened through gels or oxidants pastes (releasing oxygen) The molecules of the oxidizing gels (releasing oxygen) penetrate the intimacy of enamel and dentin, releasing oxygen, which, in turn, "break" the pigmented molecules that cause stains

3) Can I do it myself or do I need to go to the dentist?

It is not recommended to bleach your teeth without professional guidance. There should always be dentist guidance whether in the office or at home.

4) What about the safety of these products on my general health?

Yes. Like other products, and drugs used in medicine and dentistry, if used correctly as directed, the products used in whitening do not cause any harm to the system.

5) The products used in tooth whitening can cause damage to the gums?

Not if the patient did a supervised treatment and did not use products sold on TV or in supermarkets. The dentist makes a tray that will only cover the tooth surface, thus avoiding direct contact of the bleaching agent with the gums. Any injury and sensitivity should be reported immediately to the dentist.

6) Is the whitened tooth weakened?

No. The tooth structure is not affected.

7) Will tooth whitening affect existing restorations?

No. But the patient needs to know that you may have to change or tweak the old restorations, because they will not suffer from the bleaching, but may appear darker compared to the bleached teeth, causing aesthetic disharmony.

8) Can I bleach at any age?

Yes. There is no specific contraindication regarding age. 15 years and up is acceptable.

9) Can bleached teeth darken again?

Yes, but never as it was before. After 1-2 years, you might need to perform maintenance, which is done in two or three nights.

10)Does the bleaching hurt?
The treatment is completely free of pain. Occasionally it could come to temporary irritations after the bleaching on the same day.
